How to connect to your emotions

Here are various ways to increase your connection to your emotions:

  • Emotional awareness exercise: At various moments during the day, look at the list of emotions above, go over each emotion, and try to find out with which emotions we identify at the moment. It may take some practice until you manage to do it.
  • Practicing emotional release: Listen to sad music or watch a sad movie and cry, express your anger and aggressions by beating cushions and screaming, listen to happy upbeat music and jump and dance. There are also emotional release workshops with similar exercises.
  • Take a drama improv course: It has, among other exercises, one which is done in a pair. Each one thinks of an emotion, and then the two people start improvising a scene together, and each one acts out of the emotion he chose. It usually comes out funny. The goal is to incorporate emotions into every scene so it will be interesting.
  • Playing with pets: It can bring out of us a lot of affection, love, and spontaneous behavior.
  • Play with young children: They are very free to express emotions easily, and we can get inspired by them to reconnect with the Wondrous Child within us who has free emotional expression.
